But this module has an expiry date. Anyone still using LE‑TRA today should find out now what the deadlines are and what options will be available afterwards.
How much longer will SAP LE‑TRA be available?
The deadlines have been set. For SAP ECC 6.0, maintenance for LE‑TRA will end on 31 December 2027. In S/4HANA, LE‑TRA can still be used for a little longer via the compatibility layer, but here too, the licence expires on 31 December 2030. After that, the module will no longer be a viable option.
That may sound like plenty of time – but it isn’t. This is because the migration is not simply an update that can be installed during a maintenance window, but a project that requires advance planning. And consultancy capacity on the market is limited; the closer the deadlines get, the scarcer it becomes.
Why this change is more than just an update.
The successor envisaged by SAP is called SAP Transportation Management (SAP TM). On paper, it is a direct replacement – in practice, it is a fresh start. The data structures of LE‑TRA and SAP TM differ fundamentally, which is why there is no system-guided migration path. The switch is a greenfield project: the new system is set up from scratch, processes are redesigned, master data is restructured, and individual customisations and in‑house developments are reviewed one by one.
This is the crucial point that many underestimate: anyone moving away from LE‑TRA will have to rebuild their transport processing from scratch anyway – regardless of which target solution they choose. This is precisely what makes this moment an opportunity not only to transfer one’s own processes, but also to improve them.
An overview of the options. Anyone looking to replace LE‑TRA essentially has three options:
SAP TM Basic.
The entry-level version is included in the standard S/4HANA licence and covers the core functions of LE‑TRA – manual planning, carrier selection and freight cost calculation. This may be sufficient for simple scenarios.
SAP TM Advanced.
The Advanced version is required for automated, optimisation-based planning and carrier bidding. It requires an additional licence – and caution is advised here: even technical architecture decisions can trigger the need for an Advanced licence, even if only basic functions are used. The range of functions is powerful, but also complex and over‑specified for many medium-sized businesses’ requirements.
An integrated third-party solution.
SAP TM is not the only option. A specialised transport management system that integrates deeply with SAP can handle transport processing, whilst SAP remains the leading ERP system. For companies with recurring, standardisable shipments, this is often the quicker and more streamlined approach – provided the integration with the ERP is seamless and bidirectional.
